In het oog

"In het oog" is a short, personal film about rumination.

As soon as Lena starts ruminating, she gets sucked into a storm of her own thoughts. In the eye of the storm, she meets herself as a kid. Together they go on a search for a tiny snail.

The footage that my parents made in the first 10 years of my life was a leading factor in the making of my film. My research question was: how can I learn to ruminate less through childhood videos? The answer to this question has been translated into the short animated film “In het oog”.

My starting point of the making of this film was the footage that my parents made. I watched 50 hours of the material to research how I was so carefree when I was young. The conclusion was that I was noticing all the small things like butterflies, ladybugs and tiny snails. With this conclusion I started experimenting with the footage. I tried a lot of things, from VR to Rotobrushing.

At some point in my research I wondered what would happen if the adult me would meet my younger self. From there on I started to experiment with footage of myself now and from the old footage. Soon enough, I realized animation would be the way. Animation was the best way for me, because I could create whole scenes where the adult Lena and young Lena could meet.
